Bespoke Wood Moulding
Decorative wood moulding has been used in house building for many hundreds of years. However, a wood moulding does not last forever, being subject to fungal and insect infestation as well as damp. When this happens to a wood molding from an older house (a victorian terrace, for example), it brings with it another problem - that of trying to replace the damaged moulding with the same profile from stock mouldings of today. This, more often than not, cannot be done. So what's the answer? Well, firstly check the reclamation yards in your area, then check on the internet similarly. If you still have no luck the only answer is to machine a new piece of timber with the exact same profile. This can prove to be quite expensive, firstly because a new cutting iron has to be made (if none are currently available) and these are costed by the inch (25.4mm) across the face of the profile. Charges for this service vary between merchants. TIP: Once you have decided to go ahead, make sure that you order in sufficient quantity to cover the whole of the job. Think ahead, are there any more rooms where this is likely to happen? Be warned each time you have to repeat the order you will again be charged for mill time.
